Prof David P. Byrne
David Byrne is a Professor of Economics at the University of Melbourne, where he does research in empirical industrial organisation and behavioural economics. His work employs various methods and has investigated the causes and consequences of market power and other market distortions in various industries, including digital markets, petrol, electricity, water, banking, telecommunications, and gambling. He has published in leading economics journals such as the American Economic Review, Journal of Political Economy, and Quarterly Journal of Economics. He is also an Associate Editor of the International Journal of Industrial Organization and an Executive Committee member of the Asia Pacific Industrial Organization Society and European Association for Research in Industrial Economics.
Prof Byrne has also actively engaged in public policy as the Deputy Director of the Centre of Market Design at Melbourne. He has advised governments in Australia and abroad on price-fixing matters and market design inquiries. He has also been a member of the Committee for Economic Development of Australia, National Economic Panel of Australia, Melbourne Economic Forum, and Melbourne Energy Institute. In 2023, he received the Young Economist Award from the Economic Society of Australia for his research and policy impact achievements.
Prof Byrne is originally from Nova Scotia, Canada. He holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Hons.) in Economics from Mount Allison University and a PhD in Economics from Queen’s University.
